UFCW Vice President Manages Billion Dollar Wal-Mart Stocks

As UFCW strikers go without, with no end in sight, one UFCW Vice-President is doing plenty: He's managing a billion dollars worth of Wal-Mart stock, churning out retirement dollars for state employees.

Sean Harrigan, who is International Vice President and Executive Director of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Region 8 States Council, also happens to be President of the California Public Employees Retirement System (Calpers), which holds over a billion dollars of Wal-Mart stock in its $150 billion investment portfolio.

Calpers also owns many shoping centers with Vons and Ralphs, etc as tenants; and $55 million in Safeway stock, and $50 million in Alberstsons stock.

Wal-mart is one of the top non-union companies UFCW members blame for undercutting their posistions with substandard pay.

Union Vice President Harrigan gained control of the state retirement system in 2003 when he was elected President of Calpers by state employees in an election closed to regular voters and taxpayers in California.

Governor Davis appointed Harrigan to the State Personnel Board in 1999 to a ten year term and the Board sent him to Calpers as its representative. In 2003 Harrigan ran for Calpers' President and won.

Isn't that a little bit like Animal Farm? it reminds me of the line "and the pigs looked like men and the men looked like pigs"

Is there any room left at the trough?

Thank the lucky stars above to have to deal with pigs instead of rabbits.

I have met him a bunch of times, 97 Strawberry workers rally in watsonville,98 convention and the Monterey inservice with cal locals, what is he doing serving on boards out side of the UFCW? I was told when I was asked to run for musicians union office, that I 'd have to resign before accepting office or nomination becuase it was against the law to hold office in two or more unions at the same time(Later found out it was not unlawful) but let me point out how can the machine heads do a good job for the UFCW if they are on outside orgs. and boards and have side businesses?

It all goes back to the machine heads do not want anyone under them being able to make any money that the machines head don't control or sign a check for, it scares the hell out of them if a rep. under them has money from anywhere outside of the UFCW even if it's a honest buck they worrie that the money will be used against the Machine Heads in a future election.

But it is just fine for the Machines head to SUCK money from where ever they can for their own war chest!

Hey to all other reps. if you havea week end lemonade stand thats turning a profit do not tell your local's president or his off spring or he'll shut you down.
